Why Does a Heart Attack Come at an Early Age?

Heart attacks are no longer a condition reserved for the elderly. Younger adults, including those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, are increasingly being diagnosed with myocardial infarction (MI).

The Indian Heart Association reports that half of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under the age of 50, and a quarter occur under 40. That’s why understanding why heart attack comes in early age is the key.

What Happens Inside the Heart?

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked, most often due to a buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries over time. This build-up forms a plaque, and if it breaks, it can create a clot that stops blood and oxygen from reaching the heart.

In young adults, this progression can occur more rapidly than expected, particularly when multiple risk factors are present simultaneously.

Causes of Heart Attack at an Early Age: Risk Factors

Modifiable risk factors account for 90% of heart attack cases in men, and 94% in women, and most of these can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes.

The risk factors include:

● Cigarette smoking

● Physical inactivity

● Hypertension

● Obesity

● Elevated LDL cholesterol

● High triglyceride levels

Smoking is a major risk factor for myocardial infarction. It contributes to endothelial dysfunction, increased platelet aggregation, and higher blood viscosity, all of which accelerate early coronary disease in young patients.

Young Age Does Not Mean Low Risk

Heart attacks in young people are not random events. They are the result of years of silent arterial damage, compounded by lifestyle choices and sometimes genetic predisposition.

Understanding why heart attack comes in early age is your strongest defence. It can happen at any age. But with the right knowledge and habits, it does not have to.
