Can CPR Help Cardiac Arrest Victims?

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency where the heart abruptly stops beating, cutting off blood supply to the brain and vital organs.1 Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the first line of response and can improve the chances of survival.

CPR can help cardiac arrest patients by acting as a manual substitute for the heart, sustaining blood flow until advanced medical care arrives.

How Does CPR Work and Why Timing Matters

CPR combines rhythmic chest compressions with rescue breaths to maintain circulation until normal heart function is restored.3 When performed correctly, conventional manual CPR can deliver up to 33% of normal cardiac output and oxygenation.

Timing is critical. People who received bystander CPR have a 2 to 3 times greater chance of survival.

Other Factors That Affect CPR Outcomes

Several key determinants affect CPR outcomes:

Time to response: Survival is about 22.4% when CPR is started within 1 minute. It drops to 10.5% if CPR is delayed to 10 minutes or more. Simply put, every minute without CPR cuts survival chances.

Location: Approximately 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur at home, and 50% of these are unwitnessed.3 Cardiac arrest in a hospital has a significantly higher survival rate of 25.5%.

AED availability: Combining CPR with early defibrillation significantly improves outcomes.

Bystander training: In 2024, bystander CPR was initiated in only 41.7% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases in the U.S. Wider training could save thousands more lives annually.

Act Fast, Act Confidently

CPR is a proven, accessible intervention that bridges the gap between cardiac arrest and emergency care. CPR can help cardiac arrest patients by improving the chance that the heart will restart and the victim will survive.

Learning CPR is one of the most impactful health skills any individual can acquire. If you witness a cardiac arrest, call emergency services immediately and begin chest compressions without hesitation.
